I spent 20 years in recruiting and executive search. In 2006 I was finding CFO candidates with a phone book and a James Bond script — call companies, ask for the Sales Manager, build rapport, then casually ask "By the way, who is your CFO?" Write the name in a notebook. Call back the next day. 90+ calls to find 30 candidates.

My pipeline lived in an Excel file I proudly called "the beautiful Excel file." It was not beautiful. In 2018 I upgraded to a proper ATS and got a more complicated version of Excel with worse colours and more clicks. I knew exactly what was wrong with every tool I used — I just couldn't build it.
